Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) was a great companion of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He was known for his truthfulness, strength, and justice. He always stood for what was right. He cared deeply for the poor and treated everyone with fairness. Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) was also very humble, even though he became one of the most powerful leaders of Islam. His life teaches us to be brave, kind, and just.

Before Accepting Islam

Before he became a Muslim, Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) did not like Islam. He followed the old ways of his tribe in Makkah. One day, he became so angry with the new religion that he decided to stop it. He took his sword and walked toward the house of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). On the way, someone told him to first visit his own sister, who had secretly accepted Islam. When he reached her house, he heard her reading the words of the Holy Qur’an. He became angry and shouted at her. But when he saw blood on her face, he became sad. His heart softened. He asked her to let him read what she was reading. When he read the words of the Qur’an, his heart changed. He felt peace. He realized that Islam was the true religion. He went straight to the Prophet and said that he wanted to accept Islam. The Muslims became happy and said, “Now Islam will become stronger.”

Strong in Faith

Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) began to follow Islam with full love and strength. He prayed openly at the Kaaba and protected the weaker Muslims. His courage gave strength to others. He never hid his faith and was not afraid of anyone. He became a close friend and helper of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He joined in the battles, gave charity, and stood by the Prophet in times of danger. He always wanted to learn and understand the message of Islam. He would ask the Prophet questions and follow his advice with full heart.

Justice for All

Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) loved justice. He always stood for what was fair. He did not care whether a person was rich or poor, young or old—he treated everyone the same. He believed that everyone is equal before Allah. Once, a poor man came to complain about a rich person. Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) listened carefully and made sure that the poor man got justice. He did not allow anyone to use power to hurt others. He always stood with the truth.

Becoming the Khalifah

After the Prophet passed away, Hazrat Abu Bakr (Razi Allah tala anhu) became the first Khalifah. Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) helped him and gave him good advice. After Hazrat Abu Bakr (Razi Allah tala anhu) passed away, Hazrat Umar (RaziAllah tala anhu) became the second Khalifah. He ruled over a large part of the world, but he remained simple. He wore plain clothes, walked without guards, and lived in a small house. He would visit the people, listen to their problems, and solve them with care. He did not act like a king. He said, “I am just a servant of Allah.”

Serving the People

Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) would walk around at night to see if anyone needed help. Once, he saw a woman cooking water to make her children think that food was coming. She had no food at all. Hazrat Umar (Razi Allah tala anhu) felt very sad. He went to the store, picked up flour and food with his own hands, and brought it to her. He cooked the food himself and waited until the children were fed. He said, “How can I sleep if someone in my land is hungry?” This shows his love for the people.

Kindness to All

He also helped non-Muslims who lived in his land. He protected them and made sure they had food and safety. He believed in treating everyone fairly, no matter what religion they followed. Islam teaches us to be kind and respectful to all, and Hazrat Umar (RaziAllah tala anhu) followed this teaching very well.

Building a Just Society

Hazrat Umar (RaziAllah tala anhu) made many good changes during his rule. He built mosques, schools, roads, and markets. He started the Islamic calendar. He set up a system of courts and judges. He chose good people to lead towns and cities. He watched over them and removed them if they were not fair. He taught that a leader should be honest, simple, and full of care for others.

His Final Days

One day, while he was leading the prayer, a man attacked him. Hazrat Umar (RaziAllah tala anhu) was badly hurt. Even then, he asked whether the people had completed their prayer. This showed how much he cared about Salah and about the people. Before he passed away, he gave advice to the Muslims. He said, “Always fear Allah. Take care of the poor and the weak. Be kind. Be fair.” Then he passed away. The Muslims cried because they had lost a great and just leader.
